Meet Maria – Registered Nurse, Ophthalmology Outpatients
Can you describe your role in a few sentences?
My name is Maria and I am a registered nurse. I joined the Ophthalmology Outpatients team at the Centre of Excellence for Eyes at the Nightingale Hospital in January 2025.
We run Ophthalmology Retina and Glaucoma Diagnostic Clinics, carrying out a variety of ophthalmic diagnostic tests including visual acuity tests, eye pressure checks, visual field tests, optical coherence tomography (OCT), and Optos retinal photography.
I am part of an amazing team that often goes the extra mile to ensure patients and relatives attending appointments are kept informed, reassured, and receive high-quality customer care.
What does a typical day look like for you?
Although some day-to-day activities and duties don’t change, patients do. Every day brings new people, new conversations, and new opportunities to support patients through their diagnostic journey while delivering safe and effective care.
What do you enjoy most about your role?
As a nurse, I love my job. I have the pleasure of meeting people from diverse backgrounds and all walks of life. Being able to support patients, answer questions, and help them feel comfortable during what can be an anxious time is incredibly rewarding.
How does your work contribute to patient care and the wider hospital team?
By delivering accurate diagnostic tests and providing reassurance and clear communication, I help ensure patients receive the best possible experience while supporting the wider clinical team in delivering high-quality ophthalmic care.
What do you enjoy about working at the Nightingale Hospital?
Nightingale Hospital is a fantastic place to work, and the Centre of Excellence for Eyes Ophthalmology Outpatients team is an amazing team to be part of. There is a strong sense of teamwork, pride, and commitment to excellent patient care.
