For our November Staff Spotlight, we’re delighted to feature Amanda, an Ophthalmic Technician in the Centre for Excellence for Eyes here at the Nightingale. Her professionalism, skill, and commitment to patient care help ensure that every patient receives the very best experience possible.
Meet Amanda – Ophthalmic Technician
Tell us a little about your role:
Amanda works in the Centre for Excellence for Eyes at the Nightingale, within the Cataracts Day Case Unit, as part of a small, dedicated team. Her role varies from day to day, including preparing theatre, supporting colleagues with clinical tasks, and helping to facilitate a positive patient journey from start to finish.
What does a typical day look like?
No two days are ever quite the same. Amanda’s work includes preparing the theatre for procedures, assisting the clinical team throughout the day, and ensuring patients feel supported and well cared for during their time in the unit.
What do you enjoy most about your role?
“I enjoy all the clinical aspects of my job, the learning opportunities within the Trust, and being able to assist in other departments when needed. I also really value the support I receive from my managers and colleagues.”
How does your work contribute to patient care and the wider team?
Amanda plays an important part in helping the Nightingale reduce waiting lists for ophthalmology patients, easing pressure on the main hospital. Her role allows her to work autonomously while being an integral member of the wider ophthalmology team.
What inspired you to pursue this career?
“To make a difference to patients’ lives—offering ophthalmology expertise with a patient-centred approach. The surgical skills within our team can provide instant, life-changing results for patients after cataract surgery. It’s incredibly rewarding to work with colleagues and surgeons who share the same passion.”
What might people be surprised to learn about your role?
“The Nightingale operates a ‘See and Treat’ pathway, which means a reduction in hospital visits for patients and the potential for bilateral cataract surgery for suitable candidates.”
