As part of Volunteers’ Week 2026, we are proud to recognise and thank the dedicated volunteers who help make the Nightingale Hospital such a welcoming place for patients, visitors and staff.
Our volunteers play an important role in supporting the day-to-day running of the hospital. Whether assisting patients with wheelchairs, helping visitors find their way around the site, or simply offering a friendly smile and reassuring presence, they help create a positive experience for everyone who walks through our doors.

The impact of their contribution is significant. Since the start of 2026, Nightingale volunteers have already provided more than 915 hours of support, contributing to an incredible total of over 5,900 volunteer hours since the service began.
The difference volunteers make is reflected in the feedback we receive from patients:
“NHS staff and volunteers all extremely kind and helpful.”
“Everything was explained so good and made sure I understood. Such a friendly place. The volunteer lady getting a wheelchair was a big help. Came away very happy.”
“Volunteers; friendly staff; flexibility.”
“All the staff and the volunteers were very polite and helpful.”
“Friendly, helpful staff and volunteers. Really quick efficient appointments. Enjoyed café.”
“Process was very clearly explained. Very polite staff. Helpful volunteers.”
The Nightingale currently has 29 volunteers who have completed the recruitment process and continue to give their time to support patients and visitors. During Volunteers’ Week, members of the team also joined colleagues from across the Royal Devon to celebrate the invaluable contribution volunteers make throughout the Trust.
This year has also seen individual milestones achieved within the volunteer team, including volunteer Su reaching an incredible 1,000 hours of service – a reflection of the commitment, generosity and dedication demonstrated by volunteers across the Nightingale.

To mark Volunteers’ Week and thank volunteers for their ongoing support, a special cream tea was organised by Jo, Service Co-ordinator for Volunteers, and funded through the Nightingale Staff Lottery.

Volunteer Fe Francis, pictured to the left said:
“On behalf of Stan and I, thank you so much for the amazing cream teas. We both thoroughly enjoyed them and so appreciate the efforts you went to in organising them.”
The cream tea provided an opportunity to bring volunteers together and recognise the vital role they play in supporting both patients and staff.
